Another football season is upon us

Year six of O’Leary is here. What to expect this year, that is a good question. Could we win the conference? Sure. C-USA is always winnable. A C-USA coach recently compared it to NASCAR. He says “everybody is equal, it all depends on who drives his the best.” I don’t know that NASCAR is that simple, but I get the point. Which begs the question, why aren’t we competing for the title every year? I’m not saying win it every year, but we should at least be in the running. We have probably the biggest recruiting edge in the conference. Last year there were over 300 high school players who got football scholarships from this state. I’m betting a good bit of those came from the Central Florida area.

Here’s one reason why I believe we don’t. On ESPN the other day I saw a list of four or five schools who are planning to use two QBs on opening day. And there we were. Calabrese and a kid named Hodges were listed as our opening day QBs. Now maybe this Hodges kid is the next Brett Favre, I don’t know. But Lou Holtz says “if you have two quarterbacks, it means you don’t have one.” There’s a lot of truth to that. One reason our offense sucked last year was because the QBs never knew if they were going to play this week or not. And when they did play, they were afraid if they didn’t make something happen, the hook was coming. QB is a fragile position. If you try too hard to make a positive play, most of the time it backfires on you. That is when turnovers happen. Pick a QB and stick with him George.
