Coaching changes at UCF

By FCOadmin. Posted in General | 6 Comments »

Tim Salem has been demoted from offensive coordinator to tight ends coach. Sounds like his next move will be custodian. That’s quite a drop isn’t it? At least GOL is admitting that coaching changes need to be made. It’s a start.

“After evaluating the season and taking some time so that they aren’t knee-jerk decisions, I think we need to get better on offense,” O’Leary said. “I thought that changes were needed in certain areas and those changes have been made. I am anxiously looking forward to next season and this new direction that we are heading in.

Thank you Captain Oblivious.

Well took him long enough to figure that out!!

And look who he brought in…..another old buddy from NY. I just don’t have any confidence in anyone O’Leary hires. How many assistant coaches have we been through during his tenure? And so much for bringing in a young innovative coach.

It is obvious that there is no direction in the football program anymore. I guess if UCF are happy with being one of the worst teams in division 1A then lets get rid of O’Leary hire someone for one tenth his salary, the results will probably be about the same. At least UCF could save some money that way.

Give O’Leary a star (just like the elementary school teachers give out when a student achieves a great accomplishment). It took him 5 years to realize that his offensive coordinator was about as effective as using ketchup to remove a blood stain on a white blouse.

It’s amazing how much complacency oozes out of O’Leary’s pores when given a 10 year contract upfront. It’s like winning the lottery (to the tune of $5 million) and going to work. Would you take your job seriously? Would there be any concern or threat of job security if you didn’t do your job effectively/correctly?

I’m seeing as O’Leary saying/thinking, “Oh f!@# it, I still have (blank) number of years in my contract. What are they going to do? …fire me? If they do, they better fork out that lump sum (in the millions) for breach of contract.”

O’Leary’s has had the upper hand since the beginning; build me this…build me that…get me some strippers…where are my chicken nuggets with honey mustard sauce?! There’s no sense of the Athletic Director nor the President of UCF having any kind of control over Jabba the Hut. I guess the President would be O.K. with him since the kids are graduating and doing well in class. As for the AD, that’s another story.

So, after 5 years of having an incompetent offensive coordinator, his “I don’t give a f!@# attitude” has slowed down a bit. “Laffy” Taaffe comes into the picture as the new offensive coordinator; with credentials of being the offensive coordinator at Maryland in the early millenia and head coach of a Canadian team in the CFL…twice winning the Coach of the Year award. I hope “Laffy” Taaffe can influence “The Hut” in utilizing the receivers and TEs more often; creating a pass attack.

Hypothetically, you are about the worst offensive coordinator in the country (that’s 120 NCAA Div I teams). Where do you go from there? …go back to coaching in the high school ranks? Nope…not according to O’Leary. He’s still useful to this program. He will be demoted to special teams coordinator/TEs coach. Are you kidding me?! Salem will be hurting next year. There’s no Burnett to field the ball anymore and it doesn’t look like there’s anybody to inherit the position as successful as Joe did throughout his career. As for TEs, the position (under O’Leary’s philosophy) is practically obselete; just a blocking tool. If it’s just blocking that the TE will do about 98% of the time, why substitute the TE with a tackle. You take your most athletically-gifted tackle on the team and turn him into your “TE”. There were 6 games in 2008 that a TE did not catch a pass. A total of 10 receptions (for 68 yds) were made by the TE corps in 2008. Only 2 TDs were scored by this position and the largest gain in yardage (12 yds) was made by Adam Nissley; halfway thru the season he (Adam) joined the OL corps as an offensive tackle.

Can somebody tell me why Salem is still with this program? Is he married into O’Leary’s family? What’s the connection?

I do hope Tim Salem reads this post. You’re hanging around too much in Central Florida. Go away, Salem! Go far away! Or I will be forced to treat you like an unwanted stray dog and start throwing rocks at you until you head the other direction; preferably, outside the Sunshine State. You’ve definately out-stayed your welcome.

    On another note…
I found my DE for the 3rd round. Detroit Lions pick Wisconsin DE Matt Shaughnessy.

Looks like you have company. Coaches Hot Seat has GOL ranked #10.

Hey. This guy’s pretty sharp. I love it when he says he didn’t want to have a knee-jerk reaction. TO WHAT?? You are 119th out of 119 teams in total offense. Who in the hell is going to second guess you firing your offensive coordinator? You are dead freaking last!! And it took FIVE WEEKS?? You haven’t played a football game in five weeks. Five weeks you could have had this new guy helping you recruit. But not GOL. Nope. Gotta think about this. Don’t want to have a knee-jerk reaction. It’s no wonder our offense looks like it’s in quicksand.

I am very underwhemled with this decision as I believe it was more O’Leary than Salem. However O’Leary knows how to play the game. He gets rid of the O-Coordinator of the 119th ranked offense out of 119 teams. This gives the appearance that it was Salems fault and O’leary once again shifts the blame away from him. Also, the O’Leary die-hards get excited again thinking that UCF is now on its way to conference usa supremacy. I don’t know what it is going to take for people to see through this act.
Maybe next year when we go 6-6 and have the 85th ranked offense we can give coach another 10 year extension because he improved so much from the year before.

    NBA- its fantastic
    PGA- these guys are good
UCF football – its like watching paint dry

Just keeping you guys in the loop; there’s 120 NCAA Div I-A schools. Western Kentucky is under the Independent Conference.
